Sometimes I use the word “teammates” to describe partners in a relationship. Why? Because I believe the happiest couples really do operate as a team.

The best teams in the world — championship teams — utilize each player’s individual skills in order to work together in harmony to achieve a goal.

The same goes for a relationship: We can utilize our strengths as individuals to come together with our partner and build a healthy sense of love, friendship, intimacy, trust, respect, and happiness.

Why, then, do some couples “make it” while others don’t?

1: Couples who stay together eliminate judgment.

We all judge people, whether or not we openly admit it. We judge their decisions, their habits, even their appearance.

Get mad at me all you want, but you know it’s true because you’re a human which means you’ve done it before, too. It’s okay to admit it, we’re all friends here.

But, there is no place in healthy relationships for judgment.

A true bond can only be formed between two people when they can fully open up to each other and show all sides of themselves.
