Now is a time to expand, not to contract.
What is it that you’re waiting for, exactly?
I know, I know. You’re waiting for that next paycheck. You’re waiting for the weather to get nicer. You’re waiting for the clock to strike 5:00, or for the light to turn green.
You’re waiting for someone else to make the first move so you don’t have to. You’re waiting for someone to give you permission. You’re waiting for someone else to raise their hand and ask the question, because you don’t want to look stupid.
You’re waiting for a sign.
Well, guess what? This is it.
Not exactly the form you thought it’d come in, is it? That’s the funny thing about signs, they come in all shapes, sizes, and mediums. This one is yours.
This is your sign to get off of your ass and stop living your life in quiet desperation. To stop looking at the clock and start looking at the calendar. How much time has passed since you made that last promise to yourself? Or, to someone else? How many ‘tomorrows’ have passed since you took that vacation, or joined that gym?
How many next paychecks have you gotten, only to push off your next experience to — you guessed it — the NEXT paycheck?
How many times have you not wanted to look like you didn’t have the answer — so you didn’t ask — and then you continued…to not have the answer? Holy shit. A lot more times than you thought.
This is your sign.
This is your smack in the face to realize that you ain’t getting any younger, my friend. Neither am I. Nor is he, nor she, nor them. Life doesn’t give a shit about your ‘next time.’ All that life gives you is this time. Right now.
Do you know what the saddest thing in the world is? Unaccomplished goals.
The saddest thing in the world is regret. Longing, wishing that you’d just done that thing. Aren’t you tired of waiting?
Now, more than ever, we see that life can change in an instant.
I hate to be the one to break it to you; but there’s never going to be a perfect time to do what you want to do. Your life isn’t going to slow down. You’re not going to get less busy. You’re not going to magically have the time, or the money, to do every single thing you want to do. Maybe you’ll win the lottery, or land the gig of your dreams. And I hope you do.
But if you don’t, this is your sign.
This is your sign to take control of your own life and stop living it on other people’s terms. Stop living it according to what society says you should be doing. Stop living your life in the way that everyone else is living theirs if it doesn’t feel right to you.
Stop living in avoidance. Avoidance of fear. Avoidance of insecurity. Avoidance of failure. Avoidance of rejection.
These are all things that make you alive. These are all things that push you to overcome challenges, and to find out what you’re made of. These are all feelings and emotions that change you. They allow you to evolve into the person you’re meant to become. If you settle for ordinary, that’s all you’re going to get.
You don’t always get to build your wings first. People born with wings are the select few whom life has dealt a fortunate hand. For the rest of us, though, we’ve just got to jump.
We’ve got to jump — and build our wings on the way down.
That’s what’s going to make you feel alive, maybe for the very first time.
Jump, dammit. You might not get another chance.
