Many of us feel a loss of control during a crisis that can take our jobs away, separate us from loved ones, or change our entire way of life. It’s time to take back that control again.
When we reflect on the individual challenges we are facing, it is very easy to feel discouraged and alone during difficult times. But when these times are upon every living soul on earth, it gives us an opportunity to come together and support each other.
It also provides an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves. It’s easy to get caught up in the constant hustle of life and lose sight of who we really are and what’s really important to us.
Challenges are the very things that shape us into the people we choose to become. They reveal us to ourselves, and to others. They strengthen (hopefully) our relationships. Mostly, though, they can be an opportunity for growth.
I posted on Facebook and asked what everyone’s biggest personal or professional challenge has been due to this pandemic. One specific answer caught my attention.
A woman said that she feels “unimportant.” When I asked her why, she said it’s because she’s been deemed “non-essential.”
Unfortunately, the society we have created up until this point has equated our human worth with what we do for a living. That is simply not the case.
Here are some thoughts I have about that, and the general feeling of helplessness some of us are experiencing:
It’s important to take this time to reflect. To think about ourselves, whether you are at home with others or alone. This is a chance to develop even healthier habits, to stop and be introspective about the path we’ve been on in life and determine if it’s really making us happy (or not), and even to set small goals like prioritizing your sleep, creating a new routine, or something that allows you to build trust in yourself and take back control.
As you build further credibility with yourself and use the time you’ve been given to your advantage, your perspective and mindset will shift into a healthier and happier place.
Remember — you are essential, and don’t let any of this make you feel otherwise.
